Where Sunday's Message Meets Everyday Life

Resisting Temptation

As we move full steam ahead into 2024, you may be taking some time to look back through this past year considering the triumphs and challenges you’ve gone through. One of the great challenges every Christian has is the struggle against temptation. Because you have been born again and God’s Spirit indwells you does not mean you’ll never be tempted. Even after walking with the Lord for many decades, temptation still lurks around seeking to entice you at every turn.

James reminds us that “we all stumble in many ways” (James 3:2). And we are told that our Savior Himself was “tempted in every way we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). If Jesus was tempted, we would do well to remember that we will be, too. So how do we prepare to resist temptation?

A recent article by Megan Hall on the Gospel Coalition website gave some great insights to resisting the temptation to sin. Here is a list of truths to keep in mind as you fight the fight in the new year:

1. Remember the nature of God.
2. Remember the sinfulness of sin.
3. Remember the work of Christ.
4. Remember the character of Satan.
5. Remember the sorrows of the past.
6. Remember the blessings of obedience.
7. Remember the cloud of witnesses.
8. Remember the church of Christ.
9. Remember the eyes of unbelievers.
10. Remember the help of the Spirit.

Let me add one verse to encourage you in this struggle –
“… walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)
