Where Sunday's Message Meets Everyday Life

REVELATION: JESUS WINS!

This past Sunday, we began a new series on the book of Revelation. I’ll be using my website to provide support materials for this series. I hope it will be helpful.

If you would like to listen to the first message, Jesus Wins!, you can find it below:

Summary: JESUS WINS (Revelation 1:1-3)

This sermon launches a series on the book of Revelation, acknowledging the mix of excitement, confusion, and possibly even fear that many people have when approaching this book. Regardless of our initial feelings, the main truth is this: Jesus Wins!

Understanding Revelation

  • The book is called Revelation (not Revelations), and the title comes from the Greek word Apocalypsis, meaning unveiling or revealing.
  • The purpose of Revelation is to unveil Jesus Christ in His full majesty.
  • Revelation contains hundreds of Old Testament references, allusions, and symbols. The more you know the Old Testament, the better you’ll understand Revelation.

Authorship and Context

  • The majority of scholars and teachers agree that the John of Revelation is John the Apostle, who was exiled on Patmos for his faith.
  • Likely written during the reign of Domitian (AD 81-96), though some debate an earlier date (before AD 70).
  • The dating of Revelation affects interpretation:
    • Preterist view (early date) sees most or all events fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem (70 AD).
    • Futurist view (later date) sees Revelation as predicting future end-times events.

Key Themes in Revelation 1:1-3

  • The events must “soon” take place—which could mean immediately but could also mean imminent or quickly unfolding once they begin. The final words of verse 3 reinforce that “the time is near.”
  • A blessing is promised to those who read, hear, and obey the words of this prophecy (Revelation 1:3).

Application: How Should We Respond?

  1. Live with Expectancy – Jesus is coming soon.
  2. Live in Hope – God’s timing is perfect.
  3. Share Your Faith – The world needs Jesus.
  4. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus – He is the soon and coming King.

As Matthew 24:44 reminds us: “Be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Are you ready?
