Sermon Summary: The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
Revelation 19:1–10
Main Idea
Heaven erupts in hallelujahs as God’s righteous judgment is complete and the wedding celebration of the Lamb and His Bride begins. The church, purified by grace and clothed in righteousness, will be united forever with Christ, the true and eternal Bridegroom.
Introduction: The Sound of Heaven’s Hallelujahs
“Hallelujah” — a word meaning “Praise the Lord” — is used about 250 times in the Old Testament but only four times in the New Testament, all within this passage. Here in Revelation 19, John hears heaven’s chorus celebrating what is truly real: Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God.
Even though the Beast seems to control the world’s government, economy, and religion, heaven declares the truth — the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns!
I. Heaven’s Fourfold Hallelujah (vv. 1–6)
- First Hallelujah: Praise for God’s salvation, glory, and power.
- God alone holds ultimate authority.
- His judgments are true and just.
- Second Hallelujah: Celebration of Babylon’s final and irrevocable judgment.
- What looked like destruction by human hands was, in fact, the execution of God’s justice.
- Third Hallelujah: The 24 elders and four living creatures join in worship.
- All of heaven bows before the throne — no distractions, no divided hearts.
- Fourth Hallelujah: An angel calls all who fear God, small and great, to praise Him.
- The sound swells “like many waters” and “mighty peals of thunder.”
- It is an invitation to join heaven’s chorus — even now, on earth.
📖 Application: When life feels out of control, lift your hallelujah. By faith, declare that the Lord God Almighty reigns!
II. The Marriage of the Lamb (vv. 7–9)
The scene shifts from judgment to joy. The focus is now on a wedding — the union of Christ and His Church.
- The Bride Has Made Herself Ready
- She is granted to wear fine linen, bright and pure — “the righteous deeds of the saints.”
- Righteous living is both our response to and evidence of God’s saving grace.
- Ancient Jewish Wedding Imagery
- Betrothal: A binding contract with a bride price — Christ paid for His Bride with His blood (1 Cor. 6:19–20).
- Preparation Period: The groom prepares a place; the bride keeps herself pure. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you…” (John 14:2–3).
- The Groom’s Coming: Announced with a shout and trumpet — a clear picture of the rapture and Christ’s return (1 Thess. 4:16–17).
- Marriage Ceremony & Feast: A joyous, weeklong celebration — mirrored in the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Isaiah 25:6–9; Matt. 26:29).
- Blessed Are Those Invited
- The angel declares: “These are the true words of God.”
- Those who belong to Christ will share in His eternal joy and fellowship.
📖 Application: Believers are to live as a prepared bride — clothed in righteousness, awaiting the coming of the Bridegroom.
III. Worship God Alone (v. 10)
John, overwhelmed by the glory of the moment, falls at the angel’s feet to worship. The angel quickly corrects him:
“You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you… Worship God.”
This moment reminds us:
- Even angels are servants, not objects of worship.
- True worship belongs only to God.
- “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” — all Scripture and all history point to Him.
📖 Application: Every prophecy, every act of redemption, every moment of history centers on Jesus Christ. Worship Him alone.
Closing Thought
All of history is moving toward this moment — the joyful union of the Lamb and His Bride. Babylon’s destruction clears the stage for heaven’s celebration.
You are invited to the feast.
