Sermon Title: He Shall Be Called: Mighty God
Isaiah 9:6; Luke 2:4–7
Main Idea:
In the darkest of times, God sent a child—Jesus—who is not only our Savior but also our Mighty God, victorious and able to save.
Overview:
This message explores the second title given in Isaiah 9:6—Mighty God (El Gibbor)—highlighting the wonder and power of Christ’s incarnation. Though born in humble surroundings, Jesus is not merely a baby in a manger but the Almighty God, come in human flesh. This prophecy offered hope to a nation surrounded by fear and failure, and it offers us hope today.
Key Themes:
1. The Context of Isaiah’s Prophecy:
Isaiah 9:6 was spoken during a time of national crisis and moral collapse. Judah was led by the wicked King Ahaz, who rejected God, embraced idolatry, and trusted in political alliances rather than the Lord (2 Kings 16; 2 Chronicles 28). Into this darkness, God promised not a political hero, but a child—one who would be called “Mighty God.”
2. Mighty God—El Gibbor:
This title speaks of divine strength, warrior-like power, and ultimate victory. The child promised is no ordinary child—He is the Lord Himself. His might is not in worldly conquest, but in divine authority and spiritual victory.
3. Jesus Is the Mighty God:
Though Jesus appeared as an ordinary baby, His life revealed His divine power:
- He calmed storms with a word (Mark 4:35–41)
- He cast out demons (Mark 5:1–13; Luke 4:31–36)
- He healed the sick (Matthew 8:1–17)
- He raised the dead (John 11)
- He forgave sins (Mark 2:1–12)
- He accepted worship (Matthew 14:33; John 20:28)
- He taught with divine authority (Mark 1:22)
- He will judge the nations (Matthew 25:31–32)
These were not acts of a great teacher or prophet alone—these were the works of God in the flesh.
4. The Purpose of His Coming:
Jesus, the Mighty God, came not only to reveal God’s power but to save. As proclaimed in Revelation 7:10 and Luke 19:10, salvation belongs to God and the Lamb. He came to seek and to save the lost. Only Jesus—fully God and fully man—could accomplish this salvation (Acts 4:12).
Application:
- Know Who Jesus Is: Recognize the divine nature of Christ. He is not just a moral teacher or spiritual figure; He is the eternal, powerful God made flesh.
- Receive What Jesus Offers: Salvation is the greatest gift we can receive this season. Trust in Him—not in yourself, religion, or tradition—for forgiveness and new life.
- Worship the Mighty God: Let your Christmas celebration center on Christ, the mighty God who came down to us in humility, yet reigns in power.
