Sermon Summary: Seven Bowls of Wrath (Revelation 16)
Main Idea
God’s patience will one day give way to judgment. Revelation 16 shows us the sobering reality of His wrath, the hardening of sinful hearts, and the hope that believers have in His promised return.
Introduction
God is patient, not wishing any to perish (2 Peter 3:9). Yet His patience will not last forever. In Revelation 16, His wrath is poured out in the final series of judgments, and heaven declares: “It is done!”
1. The First Five Bowls – Wrath Poured Out (vv.1–11)
- Painful sores fall on those who worship the beast (v.2).
- Seas, rivers, and springs turn to blood (vv.3–4).
- The angel affirms God’s justice: “It is what they deserve!” (vv.5–7).
- The sun scorches with fire (vv.8–9).
- Darkness falls on the beast’s throne (vv.10–11). Key Observation: Even in unbearable suffering, people curse God instead of repenting.
2. The Sixth Bowl – Preparation for Final Battle (vv.12–16)
- The Euphrates dries up, preparing the way for armies from the east (v.12).
- Demonic spirits deceive the nations to gather for war at Armageddon (vv.13–14).
- Jesus inserts a reminder: “Behold, I am coming like a thief!” (v.15). Key Observation: God is sovereign even over the enemy’s preparations.
3. The Seventh Bowl – God’s Final Judgment (vv.17–21)
- A loud voice from heaven declares: “It is done!” (v.17).
- An unprecedented earthquake shakes the nations (vv.18–20).
- Babylon is remembered and made to drink the cup of wrath (v.19).
- Massive hailstones devastate the earth (v.21). Key Observation: God’s wrath will be full and final.
Theological & Practical Lessons
- God’s Wrath Is Just – He gives sinners exactly what they deserve (Romans 2:4–5).
- Sin Hardens the Heart – People curse God instead of turning to Him. Rebellion deepens without repentance.
- Evil Will Not Win – The beast’s throne is darkened; Babylon falls. God’s victory is certain.
- Now Is the Time for Mercy – God still invites us to seek Him while He may be found (Isaiah 55:6–7).
- Jesus Is Coming – Stay awake, live ready, walk in purity (v.15).
Applications
- To the believer: Stay watchful, hopeful, and pure. Don’t compromise with sin—Jesus is coming soon.
- To the unbeliever: Don’t harden your heart. God’s mercy is available now, but His wrath is real.
- To the church: Remember, evil powers gather, but our God reigns. Live as witnesses of His grace and truth.
Closing Thought
Revelation 16 is not just about wrath—it is about the holiness and justice of God. His wrath is real, deserved, and coming. But so is His mercy. The invitation still stands:
“Seek the Lord while He may be found” (Isaiah 55:6).
Jesus is coming. Be ready.
