Where Sunday's Message Meets Everyday Life

1 SAMUEL: Nothing Can Hinder the Lord

Nothing Can Hinder the Lord

1 Samuel 14:1-23

Israel faced impossible odds. The Philistines had assembled a massive army. Saul’s forces had dwindled to only 600 men. Fear had spread throughout the nation, and many Israelites were hiding rather than fighting. From a human perspective, the situation appeared hopeless.

Yet while Saul sat inactive beneath a pomegranate tree, Jonathan stepped forward in faith. Accompanied only by his armor-bearer, he crossed a dangerous pass toward a Philistine outpost. Jonathan did not know exactly what God would do, but he knew what God was capable of doing. His confidence was captured in one of the great declarations of faith in Scripture:

“Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” (1 Samuel 14:6)

Jonathan understood that victory is never determined by numbers, resources, or circumstances. God is not limited by human weakness. He can accomplish His purposes through great armies or through a single faithful servant. Jonathan acted in faith, trusting God rather than the odds.

God honored that faith. Jonathan and his armor-bearer attacked the Philistine outpost, and the Lord intervened with supernatural power. Panic spread throughout the enemy camp. Confusion erupted. An earthquake shook the ground. The Philistines began turning their swords against one another. What Jonathan could never accomplish through his own strength, God accomplished through His limitless power.

The chapter reaches its climax in verse 23:

“So the Lord saved Israel that day.”

The emphasis is clear. The victory belonged to God. Jonathan was faithful, but God was the Savior. Saul did not rescue Israel. The army did not rescue Israel. The Lord alone delivered His people.

The same principle remains true today. Whenever lives are transformed, marriages restored, prodigals brought home, or sinners saved, the glory belongs to God alone. He is the One who saves.

This victory also points beyond Jonathan to Jesus Christ. Israel faced an enemy they could not defeat, just as humanity faces the greater enemies of sin, death, and judgment. We could not save ourselves or earn God’s favor. Yet Jesus accomplished what was humanly impossible. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection, He secured salvation for all who trust in Him.

The message of 1 Samuel 14 is as relevant today as it was then: God is not limited by circumstances, resources, or human strength. He remains sovereign, powerful, and faithful. When the obstacles seem overwhelming and the odds appear impossible, believers can rest in this enduring truth:

Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.

Main Idea: Faith trusts God’s ability rather than circumstances because the Lord alone wins the victory and accomplishes His saving purposes.
