A Tale of Two Hearts
1 Samuel 18

1 Samuel 18 contrasts the hearts of Jonathan and Saul as they respond to David’s growing success. Jonathan sees David’s faithfulness, courage, and God-given favor, and responds with love. He makes a covenant with David and honors him as a brother rather than treating him as a threat.

Saul sees the same David, but responds with fear, jealousy, and envy. As David becomes more successful and beloved by Israel, Saul’s insecurity twists his perspective. David’s blessings feel like personal attacks; his success feels like a threat to Saul’s throne. Saul’s envy grows into suspicion, manipulation, violence, and continual hostility toward David.

The central lesson is that envy changes how we interpret everything around us. It turns blessings into threats, success into insults, and friends into rivals. Jonathan’s heart was governed by love, while Saul’s heart was governed by envy.

We are called to guard our hearts, because everything we do flows from them (Proverbs 4:23). When envy, resentment, or fear take root, they damage our relationships and lead us to harm others—even through hurtful words or self-serving actions.

The hope of the gospel is that Jesus does not merely improve our lives; He gives us new hearts. God can replace hearts hardened by pride, twisted by envy, and poisoned by fear with hearts that love what He loves, rejoice in the good of others, and trust His timing.
