The Way Home

Text: John 10:7–10

Main Truth

Jesus is the only door to salvation, but His invitation is open to anyone who will come to Him in faith.

Introduction

When Moses encountered God at the burning bush, God revealed His name:

“I AM WHO I AM.” (Exodus 3:14, ESV)

John’s Gospel connects the divine name revealed to Moses with Jesus Christ. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus uses several significant “I am” statements to reveal His identity, character, and mission:

• “I am the bread of life.”
• “I am the light of the world.”
• “I am the good shepherd.”
• “I am the resurrection and the life.”
• “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
• “I am the true vine.”
• “I am the door.”

Each statement reveals something essential about Jesus. When He says, “I am the door,” He presents Himself as the One who provides safety, salvation, and the way home to the Father.

1. Jesus Is the Door

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”
—John 10:9, ESV

In the first century, shepherds sometimes placed their sheep in a stone enclosure or cave for the night. These enclosures did not always have a physical gate. The shepherd would lie across the entrance and personally become the door.

• The sheep could not leave without passing the shepherd.
• Thieves and predators could not enter without confronting the shepherd.
• The shepherd stood between the flock and every danger.

Jesus uses this familiar image to describe His relationship with His people. He is not merely someone who shows us the entrance. He is the entrance.

Through Jesus, believers find:

• Salvation from sin
• Security in God’s care
• Freedom to live under His protection
• Spiritual nourishment and abundant life

2. The Door Is Exclusive

Jesus’ statement is exclusive because He identifies Himself as the only way of salvation.

“If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.”
—John 10:9, ESV

Jesus does not say that He is one door among many. He says, “I am the door.”

Salvation cannot be obtained through:

• Personal morality
• Religious activity
• Family heritage
• Good intentions
• Human effort
• Another religious path

Salvation is found in Christ alone.

Jesus later declared:

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
—John 14:6, ESV

Peter proclaimed the same truth:

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
—Acts 4:12, ESV

The way home is narrow because there is only one Savior. We do not create our own way to God. We must enter through Jesus.

3. The Invitation Is Inclusive

Although the door is exclusive, the invitation is wonderfully inclusive.

“If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.”
—John 10:9, ESV

There is an exclusive door—Jesus—and an inclusive invitation—anyone.

The invitation is not restricted by:

• Race or ethnicity
• Social standing
• Gender
• Education
• Wealth
• Reputation
• Past morality

No one is beyond the reach of Christ’s invitation.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
—John 3:16, ESV

“For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
—Romans 10:13, ESV

The offer of salvation is extended to everyone, but it must be personally received. The invitation is open to all, yet salvation belongs only to those who enter through Christ by faith.

4. Jesus Is the Way Home

The invitation is broad, but not everyone will enter.

Jesus warned: “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction… For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life.”
—Matthew 7:13–14, ESV

Many will continue down the broad road, but Jesus still calls sinners to turn and come home.

No matter how far someone has wandered, what they have done, or how hopeless their situation appears, there is a way home.

The story of the prodigal son illustrates this invitation. When the son recognized his condition, he said: “I will arise and go to my father.”
—Luke 15:18, ESV

The Father welcomes those who turn from their sin and come to Him through Jesus Christ. The door remains open, and the invitation still stands.

Application

Recognize that Jesus is your only hope

Salvation is not found in being sincere, religious, or morally respectable. It is found in Christ alone.

Respond personally to His invitation

Knowing that Jesus is the door is not the same as entering through Him. Each person must repent of sin and place his or her faith in Christ.

Rest in the security Christ provides

Those who belong to Jesus are protected by the Good Shepherd. He stands between His sheep and every enemy that could ultimately destroy them.

Welcome others to come through the Door

Because the invitation is for anyone, believers should freely share the gospel with everyone. No person should be regarded as too sinful, too distant, or too hopeless to be invited home.

Conclusion

Jesus is the only door, but that door is open to anyone who will enter.

We cannot reach the Father by our own goodness, religious effort, or chosen path. The way to the Father—the way home—is through Jesus Christ.

The question is not simply whether the door exists. The question is whether we have entered.

Jesus says: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.”
