A Time to Weep
I have started to write about the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, numerous times. I type a paragraph or two, and I stop and delete it all. The actions of Dylann Roof are incomprehensible to most people. We have all had feelings of anger that bordered on or even drifted into hatred, Continue reading

Day 5 – Rest, Fun and Worship
It looks like it’s going to be short posts for this trip. For some reason my iPad won’t connect to the Internet, so I’ll have to stick with hunting and pecking on the smaller phone keyboard. Our team divided up to enjoy some of the niceties of this area. Part of us went to a Continue reading

Day 4 … And What a Day!
Of all the good things I could say about today, the best is reflected in this picture. Our bus driver Julio prayed to receive Jesus today. Amy Ferman had been burdened over his spiritual state since we got here. Through prayer and intentional conversation, this morning he became a brother in Christ! Continue reading

Day 3 on the Site – Lots of Smiling Faces and Concrete
I’m still using my iPhone, so brevity is essential. The short story is that it was a good and tiring day. After some tasty omelette scooped by Mallory Granuiz, we returned to the site but did a brief Bibke School rather than working on the water house. We told two Bible stories with all the Continue reading

Day 2 on the Site
We had another successful day on site yesterday as we continued to lay block on the water house. We actually used up all our block and had to order more. The progress has been remarkable, plus we had some welcome cloud cover in the morning. Those who were doing the eyeglasses ministry were really blessed Continue reading

Dominican Republic Mission Trip – 1st Day on the Site
Today was hot but good. We were able to lay 270 of the 550 block on the new water house in Gaspar Hernandez and give over 30 pairs of glasses to people in the community with decreased vision. We’ll be back at it in the morning. It’s been a great time thus far. We’re doing Continue reading

Ready for a Great Week in the Dominican Republic
Since I’m typing this on my iPhone, this post will be pretty short. The plane was full from Atlanta to Santo Domingo. Once we arrived, we grabbed a quick lunch at the airport and hit the road toward Gaspar Hernandez. It was about a four hour bus ride, but we got here safely. After taping Continue reading

All I See Is Junk!
A California woman took an old, outdated computer to a recycling center. On that same day across the country, perhaps thousands of people did the very same thing, disposing of computers that either no longer worked or were ancient (at least in computer years). So why is her action any different from the others? Well, Continue reading

Is It Ever Okay to Lie?
This past Sunday we considered commandment number nine in the Ten Commandments: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16). We went beyond false testimony in a court of law and pointed to God’s call for His people to speak with integrity. As part of the message, the question was posed: “Is Continue reading

Personal but not Private
“A person’s religion is a private matter between that person and God,” wrote Jay Bookman of the Atlanta Journal Constitution a few years ago in response to a comment made by Britt Hume on Fox News. Regardless of the circumstances leading to Bookman’s comment, was he right in his assertion? Is religion a private matter? Continue reading
