I. God’s Hidden Guidance in Ordinary Circumstances (1 Samuel 9:1–14)
God is already at work long before we realize it.
– Saul has no idea that finding the lost donkeys is what leads him to Samuel.
– Saul attempts to give up twice but the servant pushes on to find the lost donkeys.
– In the most tedious task, he is led by others to cross paths with Samuel.
II. God’s Sovereign Choice Revealed (1 Samuel 9:15–21)
God chooses according to His purposes.
– God does not always inform us fully of His plans. He reveals His plan to Samuel before Saul even arrives.
– God uses the mundane to orchestrate great things. Saul seeks direction to find the donkeys, but God is fulfilling His plan.
– Saul responds with a humble attitude, emphasizing his small tribe and family.
III. God’s Preparation Before Public Calling (1 Samuel 9:22–27)
Before God sends a person publicly, He prepares them privately.
– Saul is honored at the head of the table of Samuel.
– He is given the choice meat from the sacrifice saved for the guest of honor.
– Saul receives a private word from God through Samuel and the servant is sent ahead.
IV. Christ the Better King
Christ the King
– Saul is sent to rule, Christ is sent to redeem.
– Saul is the epitome of human ideal of a king. Christ has “no form of majesty” (Isa. 53:2)
– God heard the cries of His people and gave them a king. Likewise God sees our need today and gives us the greater king.
