The Lies of a Fugitive King
1 Samuel 21

David has gone from shepherd boy to national hero to an anointed king—and now to a fugitive. Cut off from his wife, Jonathan, his family, and his former life, David is alone, afraid, and unsure where to turn.

1. Fear Can Push Us Toward Self-Reliance — 1 Samuel 21:1–9

David arrives at Nob and seeks help from Ahimelech the priest.

• He lies about being on a secret mission from Saul.
• He receives the holy bread and Goliath’s sword.
• His fear leads him to depend upon deception rather than openly trusting God.

2. Fear Can Drive Us to Desperate Places — 1 Samuel 21:10–15

David flees to Gath—the hometown of Goliath.

• When the Philistines recognize him, David becomes terrified.
• He pretends to be insane in order to escape.
• The man who once courageously faced Goliath is now reduced to desperate measures simply to survive.

Fear has a way of making us forget what we already know about God.

3. God Is With Us in the Darkest Valleys

Psalm 56 looks back on this painful period in David’s life:

“This I know, that God is for me.” — Psalm 56:9

David learned something in the darkness that could not be learned as easily in comfortable circumstances: God had not abandoned him.

We often discover God’s faithfulness most deeply through struggles, sleepless nights, heartbreak, loneliness, and loss.

And because we stand on this side of the cross and resurrection, we have even greater reason for confidence:

• Romans 8:31: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
• Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
• John 16:33: “Take heart; I have overcome the world.”

When fear comes:

• Do not allow fear to dictate your decisions.
• Turn to God when you feel you have nowhere else to turn.
• Remember that difficult circumstances do not mean God has abandoned you.
• Trust His promise: “Fear not, for I am with you.” — Isaiah 41:10
